Northcott Brothers Supports Dementia Friendly Sidmouth
At Northcott Brothers & AJ Wakely & Sons, we are proud to support a commendable campaign launched by the community group Dementia Friendly Sidmouth.
Research by Alzheimer's UK reveals that over 80% of people diagnosed with dementia have changed their shopping habits in favour of businesses that are more accommodating to their condition. This outlines the importance of creating a supportive environment for those with dementia. The campaign's online training, backed by the Alzheimer’s Society, is designed to help staff better understand and support their customers. Sabina, the funeral director based at our Sidmouth office, recently completed this online training allowing Northcott Brothers to support the campaign.
Denese Molyneux, Chairman of the Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce and Director of Molyneux Financial Planning, is a key advocate for this initiative. She emphasises that being dementia-friendly is important for everyone, particularly in a community such as Sidmouth that has a high population of retired individuals. "By having more awareness of someone’s vulnerability and therefore recognising that they may need some extra support, it’s essential to treat someone with respect and in a way that isn’t patronising, enabling them to be as independent as possible," she says.
Anne Blackburn from Dementia Friendly Sidmouth highlights the advantage for local businesses that support their customers in this way. More than a dozen local businesses, including Sidmouth Hotels, Sidmouth Print, The Donkey Sanctuary, and the Tourist Information Centre, have already completed or are about to start their training, as well as our funeral directors at Northcott Brothers.

Dementia Friendly Sidmouth is a volunteer-run community collective funded by the Sid Valley Memory Café and supported by Sidmouth Hospice at Home, Sid Valley Help, and Sidmouth Town Council. The organisation aims to ensure that every person in Sid Valley living with dementia feels understood, supported, and respected. They offer support and advice to people living with dementia and their families, and provide free, Alzheimer’s Society UK accredited dementia awareness training to businesses. They are currently seeking volunteers to help further their mission. No experience is required, and this will offer a rewarding and beneficial experience.
